The Getting-Started Checklist for New Data-Work Gig Workers
Most new data-labeling and RLHF workers lose their first few weeks of pay to avoidable setup mistakes — not skill gaps. This checklist covers what to sort out before you take your first real batch.
Before your first task
- Read the platform's onboarding and policy pages fully — especially anything about quality scoring, payment schedules, and account suspension rules. These are usually short but rarely read.
- Do every practice/qualification task carefully, even the ones that feel like a formality. Many platforms use these to set your starting quality score or task eligibility, and a rushed qualification round can lock you out of higher-paying queues from day one.
- Set up a distraction-free work environment. Data work is scored on accuracy under time pressure — a second monitor or a quiet block of time makes a measurable difference in error rate.
- Understand how and when you get paid before you rely on the income — payment cadence, minimum payout thresholds, and any fees vary a lot between platforms.
During your first batches
- Go slower than feels necessary at first. Speed is worth very little if it comes with a quality hit that limits your access to future work — you can speed up once accuracy is second nature.
- Keep your own notes on tricky guideline edge cases. Guidelines are often dense; a personal cheat-sheet saves you from re-deriving the same judgment call every time it comes up.
- Watch for guideline updates. Projects revise instructions over time, and continuing to follow an outdated version is a common, easily avoidable source of rejections.
Protecting your account
- Don't share login credentials or let anyone else complete tasks under your account — this is grounds for suspension on most platforms and hard to reverse.
- If you get a quality warning, treat it seriously and immediately — read exactly what was flagged rather than assuming it will resolve itself with more volume.
- Keep records of your submissions and any communication with support, especially around disputed rejections or payment issues.
